 SHEPHERDSTOWN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

P.O. Box 70

Shepherdstown, WV 25443

(304) 876-6120

Shepherdstown Junior High School is a sprawling former high school facility  serving Shepherdstown and the northern region of the county.  Located within the town of Shepherdstown, this facility dates from 1926 and has had numerous additions.  The most recent was a renovation and addition in 1991 that added the media center.  The Junior High curriculum for Grades 7, 8 and 9 also includes an honors program in language arts and science.

Current Use:  1998 fall enrollment totals approximately 385 students in Grades 7, 8 and 9.  Class sizes are low to average by county standards.  Additional enrollment within existing classes is possible.  The building has two Special Education classrooms and one classroom is utilized for in-school suspension.

General:  There are numerous corridors in this building and many are undersized.  Traffic congestion is a ongoing concern.  An area of particular concern is the quality of the resources available in science laboratories; lab equipment is dated and often available only at the teacher's demonstration bench.  The environmental quality of the art room on the second floor is also totally inadequate.

Although lacking in auditorium, the core facilities for this building are adequate even though dispersed to multiple ends of the building.  The media center is located at one extreme end; since it is difficult to access, it appears to be seriously underutilized.  The cafeteria is minimally sized for the school population.  The home economics, shop/technical arts and music areas all offer quality environments for learning.  Administrative office and itinerant instructional space are adequate.

Site:  The size of the property on which this junior high school facility is located is insufficient.  There is room for only one playfield.  The space available for staff parking is insufficient.  Bus loading and unloading occurs on the public street.  Pedestrian approaches from the parking lot to the main building entrance are inconvenient.  The facility has outgrown the land area available.

Building Organization and Configuration:  As a result of incremental expansion over more than sixty years, this secondary level facility has numerous corridors and difficult linkages between the various sections of the building.  Several corridors are continuously congested during the passing periods.  None-the-less, the building is successfully zoned by grade level.

Potential for Continued Use:   Although this building has future potential as an educational facility in the 21st century, its limitations strongly indicate use for a smaller student population.  Educational resources for the 9th Grade are particularly lacking.  There may be some future potential for this building as a small middle school.
